A new phone every year!? Discover intriguing insights from our community surveys

Cell phones are, undoubtedly, one of the most important and widespread communication tools at the moment. This is in clear display on the recent Pew Research Center survey, which found that 97% of people over the age of 18 in the US have a mobile phone, and 85% are smartphone users.Although there is a significant amount of research on this topic, the specific preferences of the Latino community are not always taken into account. For this reason, we launched our own survey , gathering opinions from 20,000 members of our community. Discover some of the most interesting insights below!

How much do we spend on cell phone plans?

The results of our survey confirmed one of our main suspicions: Having a smartphone is not cheap! 40% of respondents said they spend more than $60 a month for their plan, while only 11% mentioned spending less than $40.

Most of the time, this figure doesn’t include the cost of the phone itself. Two-thirds of respondents said they’re on a prepaid plan, so the cost of the device is a separate expense.

T-Mobile is the most popular provider within our community, with 26% of market share, followed by MetroPCS (22%). The rest of the market is highly fragmented.

Android or iPhone: What do Latinos prefer?

Another noteworthy fact is that, despite Apple becoming the best-selling cell phone brand in the US this year (2022), when we look at the preferences of the Latino community, we find that Android has a market share of 72%. Apparently Latinos are the ones who “think different”!

Every fall, the major phone manufacturers reveal their newest models to the world. Our community seems to love these innovations, as the majority of people surveyed (37%) said they change their device every year. This is confirmed by the fact that 54% also mentioned having purchased their current phone less than 12 months ago.

Phone usage insights

Meta seems to be the most successful social media enterprise among Latinos. This is shown by the fact that the three most widely installed social networking apps are owned by this company: Facebook (90%), Instagram (57%) and Whatsapp (52%).

The vast majority of people in our community have loved ones abroad. Fortunately, we also found that nearly two-thirds of those surveyed said they had international calls included in their phone plans.
